Adventure Racing in Costa Rica is alive and kicking! Costa Ricans (Ticos) have enjoyed the sport for a number of years. The Raid-Gauloise AR in the early 90's got the ball rolling and it has continued ever since. Their have been several Tico teams that have competed outside the country in events such as the Eco Challenge and Primal Quest but there are many teams that can't afford to race outside the country so they really enjoy the international competition.
The Pacuare Adventure Race was one of the first locally run races and it is celebrating its 6th anniversary this year. It is a 2 day stage race with teams camping one night at El Nido Del Tigre Camp on the banks of Rio Pacuare. The rainforests, rivers and small villages of the Pacuare River Valley and its surrounding area play host to the race. This year's race will include whitewater rafting, mountain biking, trekking, a ropes section, and several interesting team challenges along a secret route that will required good navigation skills. The Pro category can expect a tough and grueling race with teams arriving at the camp well into the night while the sport category will have more time to enjoy the camp and rest up for the second day of fun.
This 8 day itinerary allows teams to get acclimatized before diving into the jungle. The relaxed pace of the 2 day rafting trip on the Pacuare River is the perfect way to get warmed up and at the same time get a sneak preview of the area where the race will take place.
