Caribbean Coast
With less territory than it's pacific sister, this area hasn't been developed as much as the other coast. Starting on the northern part right next to Nicaragua's border, there is the town of Barra del Colorado. This town offers world class sport fishing and there are several lodges and small hotels that offer packages for the fishing fanatics.
Just a few hours boat ride we find the beautiful Tortuguero National Park. This area that is accessible only by water or air is the most important
nesting site for the green sea turtle. The areas surrounding the beach have also
been protected. Nature fanatics consider Tortuguero a small version of the Amazon
River in South America. Costalba Expeditions offers a variety
of packages to this area.
Leaving the immediate Coast for a moment, heading inland,
we will find the Valley of Turrialba, well know for the coffee and sugar cane productions. Turrialba is also know for the Guayabo Archaeological Monument, the biggest of it's class in the country. This fertile valley is feed by two fabulous rivers -- the Reventazon and the Pacuare. This rivers make there way down from the Talamanca Mountain Range to the Caribbean Coast and on there way they offer some
of the best whitewater in the world.
From class I to Class V, you will enjoy the beauty and action of these rivers. Go to the Rafting and Kayaking pages for more info.
We head back to the coast, near the Panamenian border. Where we'll find the Caribbean style towns of Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. With their gold sand beaches and their exuberant vegetation this area has a very relaxed atmosphere that will make you feel like you are in paradise. The town of Cahuita is part of the only National Park in Costa Rica protecting a coral reef.
